INDIAN CREEK WATERSHED
The Indian Creek
Watershed Project is Phase I of a Section 319 Grant sponsored by
the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District to
address water quality concerns within the Watershed. The
project is funded through the Environmental Protection Agency
with assistance from the Indiana Department of Environmental
Management.
Indiana’s Section
303(d) List of Impaired Waterbodies for 1998, 2002, and 2004
have shown elevated levels of E. coli in the Indian Creek and
some of its tributaries, impairing recreational uses during the
recreational season. Improvement of water quality in Indian
Creek and its tributaries for recreational and agricultural uses
and wildlife habitats is imperative for the preservation of the
historic land uses of agriculture and forest within the
watershed.

The
Indian Creek Watershed (Hydrologic Unit Code 05120201170), part of the
larger Upper White River Watershed (Hydrologic Unit Code 05120201),
encompasses 93.8 square miles of land from south of Trafalgar in Johnson
County west to Martinsville and south to northern Brown and Monroe
Counties. Major tributaries in the watershed include Indian Creek,
Barnes Creek, Goose Creek, and Sand Creek, as well as Lamb Lake and
Painted Hills Lake. The Indian Creek starts in the southwest corner of
Johnson County, flowing west to Martinsville where it discharges into
the West Fork of White River. The southeast half of Martinsville and all
of Morgantown lie within the watershed. The major roadways of State
Roads 252 and 135 and a short stretch of State Road 37 at Martinsville
pass through the watershed. Land uses within the watershed are nearly
equally divided between agriculture and forested land, with less than
10% development.

Survey Results
The Youngs Creek and Indian
Creek Watershed Projects conducted a survey at the Morgan County Fair July
28 through August 4, 2007. The survey was designed to gauge the
knowledge of watersheds and water quality in the Indian Creek Watershed.
Thanks to all who participated in the survey.

Goals
and Objectives
| Offer a cost share program
to watershed residents for implementation of Best Management
Practices (BMP’s) on lands in close proximity to streams in the
watershed. This will help prevent pollutants from entering streams.
|
| Expand SWCD water quality
education programs to communicate the importance of Best Management
Practices (BMP) installation and promote enrollment in existing
conservation programs.
|
| Inform the public through
public meetings,
press
releases, newsletters
and
community events
that focus on nonpoint source pollution and other water quality
related issues.
|
| Design and implement a
nonpoint source
pollution education program targeted to urban
residents to address the quality of runoff water from urban areas.
|
| Implement a
storm drain
labeling program to notify residents that runoff water drains
directly into nearby streams or rivers without being treated.
|
| Provide recognition to land owners and
neighborhoods that have implemented strategies to prevent nonpoint
source pollution.

INDIAN
CREEK WATERSHED MANAGEMENT PLAN
The
Indian Creek Watershed Management Plan will provide a baseline
characterization of land use, demographics, geology, topography,
physiography, benchmark data and other data that describe the processes
that affect surface water quality. A Steering Committee will be formed
to determine concerns about the water quality and develop goals,
objectives and strategies to address those concerns and guide the
direction of the Management Plan. Outreach activities such as public
meetings, educational programs, stream clean-up, storm drain labeling,
and newsletters will also be included to increase public awareness and
participation in the project.
Any interested citizen is invited to participate
at public meetings, serve on the Steering Committee, or any of the
outreach programs to be developed. For more information about the
watershed project, meeting dates or outreach activities, check this
website frequently or contact the SWCD office at:
(317)346-6102, (317)878-4064 or email
debra-ashack@iaswcd.org.
