Education Programs

Education is essential to preventing water pollution in our watersheds.  The Youngs Creek Watershed Project has several opportunities available for schools and other interest groups to utilize.  Below is a tentative list of programs that are offered through Project staff, free of charge.  Most programs can be altered to fit your needs, time constraints as well as grade levels.

Enviroscape Program - The Enviroscape is portable, interactive, watershed model that demonstrates how water pollution occurs in our communities and the conservation measures that can be used to prevent it.  This is a favorite with students and teachers.
Grade Levels:  2nd grade and Higher (Best with groups of about 25 and less)
Time:  30-50 Minutes

Youngs Creek Watershed Project - View a Powerpoint of the Youngs Creek Watershed Project and discuss the various aspects that are involved in planning and implementing watershed wide projects.  This can really be adapted to fit your various needs when dealing with watersheds, nonpoint source pollution, land use, water quality and conservation practices.
Grade Levels:  7-12th Grade
Time:  45-50 Minutes

Protecting Water Quality from Urban Runoff – This is a PowerPoint presentation that discusses polluted runoff from urban/suburban areas and how it affects our water resources.  The program covers the problems as well as the Best Management Practices used to decrease pollution.  Lots of pictures are included!
Grade Levels:  7th - 12th Grade
Time:  45-50 Minutes

Protecting Water Quality from Agricultural Runoff – This is a PowerPoint presentation that discusses polluted runoff from agricultural areas and how it affects our water resources.  The program covers the problems as well as the Best Management Practices used to decrease pollution.  Lots of pictures are included!
Grade Levels:  7th - 12th Grade
Time:  45-50 Minutes

Water Quality Testing Program - This program is a great way to get students involved in a hands on, outdoor activity, relating to water quality.  If you are able to visit a local stream or river we have all the necessary testing supplies and information to give your students/groups an introduction into water quality sampling and stream health.  We can hold this program in a classroom as well.
Grade Levels:  5th - 12th Grade
Time:  Half day or less depending on your group size and location of stream.

Stormdrain Labeling Program - This program allows groups of volunteers/students to place labels on subdivision stormdrains.  These labels notify residents that water entering the drain will eventually end up in a nearby lake or stream without being treated.  During the labeling process we also place a brochure on resident mailboxes informing them of what we are doing and some easy steps they can take to prevent pollution from entering their stormdrains.  We have all the necessary supplies.  View Stormdrain Labeling Brochure.pdf
Grade Levels:  Contact Watershed Staff
Time:  Approx. 2 Hours

Other Watershed Activities and Presentations - Example:  We take a classroom out to visit a local wetland area to discuss the vital role they play for water quality and wildlife.  If you have something in mind, please contact us to discuss what is available and for what grade level you would like it tailored to.
