Conservation Buffers

Buffers are small areas or strips of land in permanent vegetation, designed to slow water run-off, provide shelter and stabilize riparian areas.  Planned buffer strips in the agricultural landscape can effectively mitigate the movement of sediment, nutrients, and pesticides within farm fields and from farm fields.

Practices:

Field Borders
Filter Strips
Grassed Waterways
Living Snow Fences
Riparian Buffers
Shelterbreaks / Windbreaks
Wetlands
Contour Buffer Strips

Benefits of Buffers:

Slow Water Run-Off
Establishment of Natural Vegetation
Remove up to 50% or more of Nutrients and Pesticides in Run-Off
Remove up to 60% or more of Pathogens in Run-Off
Remove up to 75% or more of Sediment in Run-Off
Reduce Noise and Odor
Serve as Source of Food, Nesting Cover, and Shelter for Wildlife
Reduce Downstream Flooding
Stabilize Streambanks and Reduce Water Temperature in Stream
Reduced Tractor Rollover Due to Set Back of Steep Ditch or Creek
